About Padua
Originally, an important Roman stronghold, Padua grew into a major academic centre during the medieval times in the influential Venetian republic. Padua continued to develop into an important city during the Renaissance as well. Great renaissance figures, such as Dante and Copernicus studied here and other famous names including Petrarhca and Galileo were among the teachers. Today, tourists can go back in time by visiting the university and stroll around the narrow cobblestone streets. Popularly known as the "Bo," after a historic inn, which was once on this site, the university dates back to 1222.
